Standard 911, or enhanced 911 (e911), which allows for calls via voice or teletype for the hearing impaired, is available to more than 85 percent of residents nationwide. NG911 enables voice, text, picture and video that can be relayed to a first responder. With roughly $200 million in identified NG911 spending for fiscal year FY 2012, and the potential for $250 million in federal grants, the timing is right for states and localities to begin the decade-long process of replacing e911 systems with NG911 nationwide.
