Data Center Consolidation in the States (Jul 2011)
State fiscal conditions will drive ongoing data center consolidation efforts with a wide range of requirements for vendor-furnished goods and services.
Description
A new generation of governors took office in 2011, bringing new demands for government efficiency. While data center consolidation efforts rolled through the states in the decade prior, much work remains as states seek state-of-the-art facilities that will provide the level of reliability and efficiency needed for enterprise shared services. INPUT expects a wave of ambitious data center consolidations to emerge over the next three to five years.
Texas's 2008 data center outsourcing remains the benchmark for state efforts with North Carolina's infrastructure consolidation effort promising to be the next trend setter. This report provides vendors with the first comprehensive overview of the requirements that will be sought by states looking for consolidation and other modernization components. This will allow vendors to get ahead of the curve of likely requirements in order to acquire the necessary skill sets and partners.
The report, presented in PowerPoint format, is accompanied by a spreadsheet with more than 1,300 requirements aggregated from various solicitation documents developed by 14 states and classified into the following categories:
- Change/Configuration Management
- CRM/Ticket Management/Help Desk
- Disaster Recovery/COOP
- Facilities/Physical Infrastructure
- Inventory/Planning/Design
- Network Services
- Operation & Maintenance
- Project/Program/Portfolio Management
- QA/Performance Management
- Security/Access Control/Incident Response
- Strategy/Innovation
- Training/Education & Documentation
More than 500 of the requirements are subclassified using the categories above as well as the following secondary categories:
- Cloud Computing
- Electrical Systems/Power Supply
- Energy Conservation/Green Tech
- HVAC Systems
- Mail Services
- Migration Services
- Print Services
- Virtualization
Each requirement is tagged with information that will allow vendor users to backtrack to the original document within INPUT's Opportunities Data Base for additional information.
