The 2013 Medicaid Enterprise Systems Conference (MESC) was held September 8-12 in Charleston, S.C. The MESC’s theme was “Enabling Healthcare Innovation,” and for the first time, states came to Charleston with tangible, innovative projects that were mere dreams in past conferences. The annual event, coordinated by the New England States Consortium Systems Organization (NESCSO), brings together thought leaders from the public and private sectors to share ideas and information related to the Medicaid enterprise. The event consisted of various breakout sessions under the following themes: • Data needs/analytics • Eligibility and enrollment systems • Health information technology (HIT)/health information exchange (HIE) • Health insurance exchange (HIX) integration within the Medicaid enterprise • Medicaid information technology architecture (MITA) • Operations/management/procurement • Standards and compliances
