AFCEA NOVA held their monthly Luncheon on January 18, 2019 at the Sheraton Tysons in Vienna, Virginia. This month’s guest speaker was Stephen Wallace, Technical Director of the Development and Business Center at DISA.  The main objective of his presentation was to provide a quick overview of the Emerging Technology Directorate (ETD).  As a new division, ETD was created to promote innovation in technology within The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Stephen Wallace will serve as the first scientific professional leading the way for DISA’s new division.

To accomplish some of its immediate and future goals, ETD plans to promote demands through the building of new vendor relations and growth by means of three new offices within ETD which in turn will act as a dual liaison between DISA’s program office and industry. These three divisions are the Innovation Support Office, Collaboration and Defense Office, and the Innovation Office.

The directorate is looking to drive innovation by focusing on the following technologies which are Browser Isolation, Software Defined Networks, Agile and Resilient Architecture/Gray Networks, Assured Identity, Machine Learning and lastly Mobile Desk Convergence.  According to Stephen Wallace, one of the main goals for Brower Isolation is to be completely transparent to users – the focus is not about just being perfect, but more so about offering the right technology for a given solution.  DISA’s Business Center is relaying that the new directorate will also leverage the Small Business Office for more insight with a general request to vendors to keep innovative technologies a priority while ensuring that all ideas adhere to realistic deliverables and less than 5 years out.

The event was brief, but the outcome provided industry with the opportunity to gain an understanding of how DISA is looking to promote Innovation in the coming years.
