This week, Deltek will attend the National WIC Association (NWA) 2013 Technology and Program Integrity Conference in Dallas, Texas. This year’s three conference tracks – technology, electronic benefits transfer (EBT) and program integrity – are sure to provide a wealth of updates on states’ WIC IT projects, including those for management information system (MIS), EBT, fraud prevention and more.

Sessions will highlight the newest technologies being piloted by states today, with topics including the future of WIC surveillance systems, fraud prevention strategies, benefits of data mining and data analysis, new technologies for vendor management, and the new RFP model for WIC EBT. Deltek will publish a conference recap highlighting the most valuable insights for the vendor community, including newly identified procurement opportunities. Look for the recap here in late September.

In the meantime, vendors interested in identifying upcoming WIC IT opportunities and increasing their company’s footprint in the market can turn to Deltek’s recently released “WIC EBT Systems Market” Industry Insight report, generated using Deltek’s database of State & Local Opportunities. Approximately 100 opportunities were identified as either WIC EBT or having WIC EBT-related components such as planning, feasibility studies and quality assurance. Most state opportunities represented stand-alone WIC EBT solicitations.

While many states have yet to determine which type of EBT system they will be soliciting, Deltek has identified several emerging types. Early EBT systems implementations include cards with real-time online verification and cards with embedded chips that store benefits data offline. Consortia and pilots for portable solutions are also in play. A copy of the report can be downloaded here.
