Deltek’s 2015 Federal Update: Cloud, Data Center, Big Data, and Mobility, 2014-2019 report explores key trends in cloud, data centers, big data, and mobility that are transforming federal IT.

Deltek forecasts federal demand for vendor-furnished cloud computing services will increase from $2.5 billion in FY 2014 to $6.5 billion in FY 2019 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 21%. Similarly, Deltek forecasts federal demand for vendor-provided core big data solutions will increase from $1.6 billion in FY 2014 to $2.5 billion in FY 2019 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.6%.

Key Findings

Federal agencies are under pressure to increase efficiency, manage costs, and improve citizen services by optimizing their IT environments. Investing in cloud computing, big data, data center optimization and mobility solutions can help agencies fundamentally transform their use of IT to reduce costs and increase capabilities. Despite a landscape of flat or shrinking IT budgets, agency investments in these areas are promising and represent growth opportunities for vendors with robust and secure solutions.

Significant factors shaping these technology areas:

  • FY 2013 cloud spending within the Department of Defense slowed compared to FY 2012, while civilian agencies have moved to the cloud more aggressively.
  • Red tape surrounding cloud procurements is increasing as agencies work data access/management clauses and vendor FedRAMP certification into requirements..
  • Agencies continue to plod toward data center consolidation and optimization, but still face challenges as the phase of easy wins ends and the number of identified data centers grows from around 2,000 four years ago to more than 9,000 in FY 2014.
  • From FY 2010 to 2014, spending on big data goods and services rose by 16%, from $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion with the concentration of spending on IT services.
  • Cloud platforms, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and network modernization are driving broader mobile access and device independence.
  • Critical Insight for Vendors

Deltek’s 2015 Federal Update: Cloud, Data Center, Big Data, and Mobility, 2014-2019 report takes a strategic 5-year view of the market factors shaping federal procurement of cloud computing, data center consolidation, big data, and mobility goods and services.
