Background:

Hawaii, an archipelago of islands located in the central Pacific Ocean is part of American territory as one of its fifty states.  Similar to Alaska, neither of these states border any U.S. state and are outside of the continental United States (OCONUS). There are eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, L U.anai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island.  Hawaii was known to be an independent Kingdom until 1893 before Queen Lili?uokalani was overthrown and replaced by a group of members supported by the United States called the Committee of Safety, which helped create the Republic of Hawaii in 1894. After the U.S. annexation during President William McKinley’s term, Hawaii came under U.S. territory in 1898 lasting until 1959. After World War II, Hawaii gained statehood on August 21, 1959.

What makes Hawaii such a strategic location?

Hawaii’s strategic location in the Asia-Pacific region has made it an appropriate home to the U.S. military since it became a U.S. territory. The historic attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which led the United States into World War II, was the most notable event in Hawaii’s military history. The island is the central point between the United States and China (Far East) and this is of high importance for both trade and defense. Other reasons why the state is strategically important is its proximity to U.S. territories in Guam and American Samoa; its proximity to U.S. forces and allies in the Pacific, which include South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines; and proximity to North Korea and China, who are both U.S. rivals and nations the U.S tries to combat in the Pacific. Hawaii also assists the U.S. military with port and aircraft refueling and is a good staging area for possible military action.

Today, “Big Island” is the headquarters of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM). USPACOM comprises Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force service components. Hawaii is home to 11 U.S. military bases, and at least for one for every branch. The military is the second largest economic driver for the state with more than 146,000 military members and their dependents across the state and generating nearly $15 billion for the state’s economy and crated an estimated 100,000 civilians across the many military bases across Hawaii’s islands.

Conclusion

The state of Hawaii will continue to play an important role for government agencies due to its geostrategic location and proximity to other regions in the Pacific. All military branches have a presence on the island and continue to support the warfighter and combat operations. With the increase in the federal budget and the tense relations in the Pacific, we can expect to have more contracting opportunities in the Pacific over the next 5-10 years.
