AI, robotic process automation gain steam in state government

According to new data revealed at the Annual Conference of the National Association of State Technology Directors, AI and robotic process automation are emerging as the most promising technologies for State IT. At the conference, NASCIO officials offered a preview of the organization’s annual survey findings, which show that 65% of state CIOs believe AI and robotic process automation will be the most impactful emerging technology for government technology.

At the conference, several state CIOs showed support for these technologies. Indiana CIO Dewand Neely said robotic process automation was especially pertinent to the Indiana Office of Technology. Ervan Rodgers, CIO for Ohio, expanded upon the state’s Innovate Ohio program, which was created specifically to bring new technologies, like AI and RPA, into state government.

As these technologies are still emerging, and they have not fully found their way into regular use in government, the potential is there. These technologies have been priorities for years, and seeing a fairly significant jump in NASCIOs survey responses could be indicative that more could be coming in this field. Although there are challenges in government, such as the need to convince decision makers they are worthwhile to pursue and finding knowledgeable and capable staff to manage these technologies, these are still worth monitoring over the coming years as states likely will continue to find ways to incorporate them into their technology portfolios.
